Why oral health matters – Improving care through better mouth care assessments

Date 6 August 2026

When we think about healthcare, we often focus on medication management, mobility, nutrition, or personal care.

One area that has historically been overlooked is oral health.

At My Caring, we recognise that good oral hygiene is fundamental to a person’s overall health, comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

As a specialist provider, we’re committed to delivering person-centred care, which is why we have introduced an Oral Health Assessment Tool based on the Health Education England Mouth Care Matters Campaign (2019).

This assessment helps us develop an individualised oral care plan that reflects the person’s needs, preferences and abilities.

Oral health is about much more than teeth

A healthy mouth enables us to eat, drink, communicate, smile and socialise with confidence.

For people living with complex health needs, neurological conditions, physical disabilities, or long-term illnesses, maintaining good oral health can become increasingly difficult without the right support.

Poor oral hygiene can lead to a range of painful conditions including tooth decay, gum disease, mouth ulcers, oral infections and bad breath.

These issues can significantly affect a person’s ability to eat comfortably, resulting in poor nutrition, dehydration and unintended weight loss.

Research also demonstrates links between poor oral health and wider health complications.

Harmful bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream or be inhaled into the lungs, leading to respiratory infections such as pneumonia, particularly for individuals with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).

There is also growing evidence that poor oral health may contribute to cardiovascular disease and negatively affect diabetes management.

For individuals receiving complex care, these risks make proactive mouth care an essential component of safe, high-quality healthcare.

Why oral health can be overlooked

Despite its importance, traditionally oral health has not received the attention it deserves.

People receiving care at home may be unable to brush their own teeth due to reduced mobility, cognitive impairment, neurological conditions or physical disabilities.

Others may experience dry mouth as a side effect of medication or other medical treatments, increasing the risk of tooth decay and infection.

Without structured assessments, subtle changes in oral health can go unnoticed until they become painful or require treatment.

This is why routine oral health assessments are recognised as best practice across health and social care services.

Introducing our oral health assessment tool

At My Caring, we’ve also implemented a weekly Oral Health Assessment Tool.

Our weekly assessment enables our care staff to identify oral health needs early and ensure every individual receives personalised care tailored to their specific requirements.

The assessment considers areas including:

The benefits of weekly oral health assessments

Routine oral health assessments offer numerous benefits for both the clients we support and the staff delivering their care.

Regular assessments allow staff to detect issues such as mouth ulcers, infections, damaged teeth, poorly fitting dentures or signs of oral disease before they become serious.

Early intervention often prevents unnecessary pain, hospital admissions and emergency dental treatment.

A healthy mouth allows individuals to chew and swallow comfortably.

By identifying problems early, we help reduce barriers to eating and drinking, supporting better nutrition, hydration and overall wellbeing.

For people with complex healthcare needs, maintaining good oral hygiene can reduce harmful bacteria within the mouth.

This is particularly important for individuals at risk of aspiration, where bacteria may enter the lungs and contribute to respiratory infections.

Oral discomfort can affect every aspect of daily life, from speaking and eating to smiling and interacting with others.

Maintaining good oral health helps people feel more comfortable, confident and able to engage socially, while preserving dignity and promoting independence wherever possible.

Using a structured assessment ensures that mouth care is not left to chance.

Every member of staff understands the individual’s needs, preferences and level of support required, resulting in consistent, compassionate care.

Daily mouth care makes a difference

Assessment is only the first step.

Daily oral hygiene remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect oral health.

This includes:

Even small actions can significantly improve comfort and reduce the risk of complications.

Our Commitment

We believe excellent care extends far beyond meeting basic needs. Every aspect of a person’s health matters, including their oral health.

By introducing an Oral Health Assessment Tool, we are strengthening our commitment to delivering safe, evidence-based, person-centred care.

Our teams receive training, guidance and support to ensure oral health becomes an integral part of every care plan, helping us identify concerns early, initiate treatment, promote independence wherever possible, and improve health outcomes for the people we support.

Good oral hygiene is not simply about preventing dental problems, it is about protecting health, preserving dignity, enhancing comfort and improving quality of life.

Because when we care for the whole person, we create better outcomes, better experiences, and better lives.
